War as a (Fatal) Diversion from Reality.  Egypt has been in a proxy war for some time with Ethiopia. Egypt and Ethiopia stand on the brink of a formal war neither can afford. It is a war, moreover, demanded by the Egyptian media and street. It is unjustified and will resolve none of Egypt’s urgent needs.  It is a war which would, in fact, dramatically worsen Egypt’s strategic position at a critical time; turn a potential major strategic partner into an implacable foe; damage the security of one of the world’s most important sea lines of communications (the Red Sea—Suez) at huge risk to the fragile global trading system; and cause the death and disaffection of many Ethiopians and Egyptians.
